Where does the cacao come from?

In the lush north of Madagascar, nestled between tropical forests and the foothills of the Tsaratanana Mountains, lies the Sambirano Valley – one of the world’s most renowned regions for fine flavor cocoa. It is here that Swedish cocoa grower Bertil Akesson began his journey into the world of cacao, spices, and sustainable agriculture.

The story begins decades earlier, in the 1970s, when Bertil’s father – a Swedish diplomat and entrepreneur – settled in Madagascar after assignments in Paris and Cameroon. On their family estates, Bertil immersed himself in the life of the plantations, gradually mastering the art of cultivation and post-harvest processing. His mission: to produce the highest quality cacao and spices in a way that honors both nature and people.

Today, Bertil’s single estate in the Sambirano Valley is legendary in the craft chocolate world. His beans were among the very first that many small-batch chocolate makers experimented with – and with good reason. Certified organic, carefully hand-harvested, and processed with meticulous attention to fermentation and drying, these beans are consistently fruit-forward, vibrant, and full of bright acidity. Their unique flavor has made its way into award-winning chocolate bars around the world, earning dozens of international accolades.

Buying directly from specific plots on Bertil’s farm ensures full traceability and an unmistakable taste of origin. His cocoa tells a story: of Swedish curiosity, Malagasy terroir, and a relentless pursuit of quality. Premium chocolate from Iceland – creative, uncompromising, and handmade

Omnom is chocolate with character. Founded in 2013 in a former gas station in Reykjavík, Omnom blends culinary craftsmanship with artistic flair. Behind the brand are chef Kjartan Gíslason and entrepreneur Óskar Þórðarson – two friends on a mission to create exceptional bean-to-bar chocolate from Iceland.

They process fine cacao beans from Madagascar, Tanzania, and Nicaragua in small batches right on site. Carefully selected ingredients like natural cane sugar, handpicked spices, Icelandic milk powder, and sea salt from the Westfjords complete the recipe. The milk comes from over 700 local farms and is processed using carbon-free energy. Even darker milk chocolates like Dark Milk of Tanzania (65%) showcase how precisely Omnom balances flavor – without unnecessary additives.

Sustainability is built into everything Omnom does: from geothermally produced sea salt by Saltverk to reusing brine for salting roasted almonds. Their Coffee + Milk bar, developed with Reykjavík Roasters, contains more caffeine than a double espresso – using beans from the progressive Dona Nenem farm in Brazil.

Omnom’s style is as bold as its flavor: no standard bars here, but geometrically broken shards in packaging inspired by pop art, surrealism, and Nordic design.
