Makira is a remote, lush island in the eastern Solomon Islands – one of the Pacific’s most untouched cocoa origins. Here, farmer Lucy cultivates cocoa on her own land with a bold and inspiring approach: she employs only women to help grow, ferment, and dry the beans using traditional, hands-on methods. Thanks to the income she earns from producing high-quality cocoa, Lucy has been able to send both of her daughters to university in Australia – possibly the next generation to carry on her legacy.

The natural environment of Makira is ideal for fine cocoa: a warm, humid tropical climate, rich volcanic soils, frequent rainfall, and a steady ocean breeze create the perfect conditions for slow, even ripening of the cacao pods. Surrounded by rainforest, rivers, and coastal air, the cocoa develops with depth and clarity.

Makira cocoa is known for its smooth and balanced profile, often with soft fruit notes, gentle acidity, and a clean melt. Carefully fermented and sun-dried in small batches, the beans retain the character of their origin – and reflect a story of empowerment, craftsmanship, and future potential.
